Inside a Community L.E.A Primary School Runji Zuba:Challenges Threaten Learning Despite Teacher Dedication
In the heart of our community, pupils at the L.E.A Primary School Runji Zuba Abuja continue to learn amid challenges that go beyond classrooms and textbooks. Despite the dedication of teachers and students, learning is affected by environmental issues, community trespassing, and a lack of government support.
Madam Ruth Barnabas, the principal, shared insights about the school’s current situation:
“The school currently has 220 pupils and 55 teachers. The condition of the classrooms and learning facilities is okay. However, the school is not yet fenced, thieves disturb the premises, and people who live nearby often trespass. Unfortunately, the government has not recently provided any support, such as books or teaching materials.”
Teachers highlighted additional challenges impacting students’ learning.
Mr. Joshua Tsufem said, “The community often dumps refuse near the school, and the restrooms have been destabilized, which makes the environment uncomfortable for pupils.”
Mrs. Grace Haruna added, “The state of the school sometimes affects students’ health, and some community residents even steal learning materials, which often frightens the students.”
During my visit, I observed that while teachers and students make efforts to maintain the school environment each morning, the compound is often disrupted by community activity at night. Classrooms are functional but crowded in some areas, and the lack of fencing allows unauthorized access, which can affect the pupils’ safety and concentration. Despite these challenges, teachers remain dedicated, and pupils show eagerness to learning.
Both the principal and teachers noted the absence of government support in recent times. They called for:
Provision of books and teaching materials
Fencing of the school compound to improve safety
Better attention to the maintenance of public school facilities
While the pupils were unavailable for comment due to ongoing examinations, the challenges observed demonstrate the resilience of both teachers and students. Public schools like this are vital to community development, and addressing their challenges is essential for creating safe and effective learning environments.
Closing Thought:
Ensuring pupils have safe, clean, and resourceful environments is a shared responsibility. Increased attention and support from the government and community can empower educators and learners, and strengthen the future of our children.
