The Hidden Cost: How Some Nigerian Women Are Selling Their Eggs For Money-And Why It Must Stop. By Eze Anthony
“The body is not a commodity. The womb is not for trade. The future of our girls cannot be sold.”
In today’s Nigeria, where hardship tightens its grip on the average citizen and youth unemployment soars, a deeply troubling trend is emerging among some of our young women: the selling of menstrual eggs for money. While this practice may appear hidden from public view, its consequences are real, dangerous, and morally disturbing.
As a youth and an aspiring journalist, I find it urgent to speak up—not just for the sake of our women, but for the future of dignity, health, and ethical responsibility in Nigeria.
---
Why Are Women Selling Their Eggs?
For many, the answer lies in poverty and desperation. With the rising cost of education, feeding, and basic survival, some young women are lured into clinics or private arrangements where their eggs are harvested for financial compensation.
Often disguised under terms like “donation,” these practices prey on the economically vulnerable. Influencers or friends who have "benefited" may unintentionally encourage others to take the same route, without revealing the physical or emotional costs involved.
---
The Hidden Dangers
What many do not realize is that egg harvesting is not a simple or harmless process. It requires:
Hormonal injections to overstimulate the ovaries
Risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
Possible internal bleeding or infections
Long-term risk of infertility
Emotional trauma and regret
Many young women walk into these clinics uninformed, unprotected, and unheard.
---
Who Is Behind This?
Behind the scenes are unregulated fertility clinics, unethical doctors, and rich clients, often men, who fund these procedures without regard for the well-being of the young women involved.
These medical professionals betray their oath when they prioritize profit over health. These clients, who view human life and dignity as something to be purchased, are complicit in a growing moral crisis.
---
What Must Be Done?
We cannot stay silent.
1. The Nigerian government must urgently regulate fertility clinics and crack down on illegal egg harvesting.
2. Awareness campaigns should be launched in schools and campuses to educate young women on the risks.
3. Empowerment programs must provide real opportunities so that no young woman feels her only asset is her body.
4. Ethical reporting by media houses can shine a light on this practice and protect potential victims.

A Final Word
Our sisters are not for sale. Our bodies are not for barter. We must not watch in silence while economic desperation turns women into tools for profit.
As young Nigerians, as leaders of tomorrow, and as human beings with conscience, we must rise to protect the dignity of every girl. No amount of money is worth the price of health, fertility, or self-respect.
