"Security versus Sovereignty": The inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun, has prohibited Amotekun and vigilante groups from participating in the upcoming Ondo state governorship election, slated for November 16, 2024. This decision aims to ensure a secure and peaceful electoral process.
The election will feature 17 political parties, with candidates' particulars already published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for publc scrutiny. The electoral body urges Nigerians to verify the candidates' documents, and any challenges should be addressed in a federal high court.
To maintain order, the police will deploy specialized units including;
- Special intervention squad
- Police Mobile force
- Counter-terroism unit
- Special protection unit
- Explosive Ordance Disposal unit
- K-9 unit.
Ariel patrols via helicopters and gunboats surveillance will also safeguard the state's water ways and riverine areas.
The IAP emphasized adherence to the electoral act 2022, ensuring fairness and transparency. Only federal security agencies and inter-agency consultative committee on election security members will oversee election security.
